In recent years, diversity and inclusion have gained significance in India’s automotive and manufacturing sector, with an increasing number of companies wanting to create an equitable workplace. As part of its commitment towards gender diversity, MG Motor India presently runs the ‘Drive Her Back’ initiative, an employment program that aims to empower experienced and qualified women to re-enter the workforce.
MG Motor India launched the ‘Drive Her Back’ campaign in 2019 to provide women with inclusive and equal professional opportunities across various verticals within the brand. This initiative aims to harness the skills and expertise of talented women professionals. They are brought on board through one-year contracts, with absorption based on their performance.
In an interaction with TOI Auto, Yeshwinder Patial, Senior Director of Human Resources, MG Motor India said, “’Drive Her Back’ has empowered over 60 women across various domains, attracting over 2,000 applications. To expand the reach of our initiative, we’ve partnered with consultants and search specialists to broaden our search parameters”.
MG’s commitment to empowering women from local communities
The company also offers employment opportunities, particularly for women in neighbouring villages of Halol, Gujarat. Currently, over 700 women are a part of MG Halol’s shop floor, hailing from regions including Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, and Chota Udepur districts.
Through MG’s programs, these women undergo training in various areas, such as personality development, work focus, lifestyle enhancement, stress management, and more. This tailored approach equips them with the skills needed not only for their roles at MG but also for personal growth.
Furthermore, the on-the-job training and technical education ensure that they excel in their specific roles, while additional coaching in driving skills expands their horizons even further.
35% women workforce at the moment
Commenting on the women workforce, Patial said, “Currently, MG Motor India has over 3,000 employees, and women comprise of more than 35% of the workforce. We understand that achieving diversity is not just about hiring more women but also about creating a supportive and inclusive work environment that empowers everyone. Currently, MG has approximately 20% women at senior levels.”
Further, he added, “Women at MG Motor India hold key positions across various functions, including Communication, Legal, Plant HR, Corporate HR, CRM, Manufacturing, Environmental Health, and Safety, Finance, Sales, Engineering, Purchase & Supply chain, demonstrating our commitment towards gender diversity.”
Elaborating on the hiring strategy, Patial said, “MG Motor India aims to ensure equal representation of women across all functions, and will be increasing the number of women in its workforce to 50% in the coming years.”
Other initiatives for women empowerment
Over the last few years, MG Motor India has taken various initiatives for women’s empowerment, such as Women Interactive Network for Development (WIND). This initiative focuses on the development of women employees, including establishing leadership connections, sessions on personal branding, communicating with impact, sessions with women leaders, time management, health and hygiene, teamwork, financial awareness, confidence-building sessions, on-the-job training, financial awareness, and others.

Fifth season of ‘Drive Her Back’ coming soon
“The brand is now gearing up to announce the 5th edition of ‘Drive Her Back’ campaign soon. At MG Motor India, we drive engagement and participation from both female and male audiences in supporting and advocating for gender equality within the community,” Patial asserted.
