Xiaomi’s foray into EVs reflects China’s push towards electric and hybrid vehicles, aiming for a greener automotive future.

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has stepped into the electric vehicle market with its debut offering, the SU7 sedan.

During a live event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun drew comparisons with the popular Tesla Model 3, setting a target for availability in Chinese cities by May.

Jun expressed Xiaomi’s ambitious plans, aiming to invest significantly in core technologies to establish itself as one of the top global automakers within 15 to 20 years, as reported by The Indian Express.

Here are the highlights of the Xiaomi SU7:

  • Impressive Performance: The SU7 boasts a remarkable acceleration, going from zero to a hundred kilometres per hour in just 2.78 seconds, with a top speed of 265 kilometres per hour. Its dual motors deliver 637 horsepower and 838 newton metres of peak turbo power, comparable to Tesla’s Cybertruck. Xiaomi claims a range of 700 to 900 kilometres, depending on the model.
  • Sleek Design: Measuring five metres long and two metres wide, the SU7 sedan features an elegant, low stance with a drag coefficient of 0.195. Xiaomi offers a range of nine colour options, including water drop headlights, halo tail lights, and an active rear spoiler.
  • Advanced Technology: Running on Xiaomi’s Hyper OS, the SU7 integrates seamlessly with Xiaomi devices. It comes equipped with a wraparound cockpit, multiple screens, and driver assistance features.
  • Variants and Pricing: The base model, starting at 215,900 Chinese Yuans (approximately Rs 24,90,413), offers a 73.6 kWh battery with a range of 700 kilometres. The SU7 Pro, priced at 245,900 yuan (about Rs 28,36,464), boasts a 94.3 kWh battery with an 830-kilometre range. The top-tier SU7 Max, starting at 299,900 yuan (approximately Rs 34,59,356), features a 101 kWh battery providing nearly 900 kilometres of range.

Analysts foresee Xiaomi’s entry into the premium EV segment as a strategic move to carve a niche against established brands like Tesla and Nio. Leveraging its extensive user base from the smartphone market, Xiaomi plans to target affluent Chinese consumers with its premium EV offering, as reported by NDTV.

With the launch of the SU7, Xiaomi aims to disrupt the status quo and establish itself as a key player in China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.
