WhatsApp status update will allow 1-minute videos soon

WhatsApp status updates have supported text since its release but video is slowly becoming a core part of the feature that users want.

WhatsApp has been bringing a range of upgrades over the last few months and continues to do so in an effort to improve the user experience. From introducing WhatsApp channels to making major UI changes, the platform has been upgraded to great extents, further hinting that there is more to go. In one such move, WhatsApp recently unveiled a much-awaited feature that will allow users to upload a minute-long clip to their status.

This comes in the wake of longstanding requests from several users who have been urging the platform to extend the previous 30-second limit on video uploads. In line with the requests, WhatsApp now aims to permit one-minute videos on its status feature, just like Instagram.

WhatsApp plans to allow one-minute videos on status

According to a WABetainfo report, WhatsApp is presently testing a feature that will allow users to add a minute-long video to their status updates. With this, users will no longer need to crop or shorten their videos to 30 seconds. If the video exceeds the one-minute mark, WhatsApp will automatically split it into 60-second segments.

While the feature has been discovered in WhatsApp beta for Android version and is only available to a small subset of Android smartphone users, it is expected to be rolled out for others in the coming weeks. Prior to that, the company might also consider taking feedback before implementing this change.

Following the update, users willing to take advantage of WhatsApp’s one-minute status update can follow the given guide:

1. Open the WhatsApp application on your Android or iOS device.

2. Go to the ‘Status’ section and click on the ‘My Status’ icon to upload a video.

3. Select the video and confirm that it does not exceed the required one minute in length.

4. Once done, upload it to the video status for your contacts to view.

Note: While the update is presently available for beta testers who have already installed the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android from the Google Play Store, once rolled out for all, users will also need to update WhatsApp to view longer videos on status.

Other features

Besides the extended status limit, a recent WABetaInfo report also suggested that the company will bring another update that will let users mention their contacts in status updates, just like Instagram. Users who get mentioned will also receive a notification. Along with that, WhatsApp is reportedly also working on facilitating easier QR payments by allowing users to easily share their QR codes straight from the chats tab.
